Considerations When Selecting a Skilled Nursing Facility

Considerations When Selecting a Skilled Nursing Facility

The decision about whether to move into a skilled nursing facility is never an easy decision to make. It can be especially hard to make that decision on behalf of a friend or family member. At the same time, skilled nursing facilities can provide necessary care and comfort for a person with medical needs. Once it has been determined that this move is the best decision, friends and family members are often tasked with finding the right facility for their loved one. This can be a daunting task, and, with so many skilled communities in the St. Louis area, many people wonder how to select a facility that is a good fit for their loved one. Following is a list of things to consider when selecting a skilled nursing facility:

·      Medical needs – If your loved one has any special medical needs, is the facility equipped to meet those needs? For example, if your loved one has a history of wandering, can the facility accommodate this need to keep your loved one safe?

·      Proximity – Is the facility nearby friends and family? Will loved ones be able to visit frequently or will the location make it difficult to visit?

·      Atmosphere – Is the facility welcoming? When you walk in the door, are you met with smiling faces? Does the facility appear to be well-kept?

·      Referrals – Do you know anyone who has stayed at the facility? If so, was their experience pleasant? Do you have any friends or family members that currently live there?

·      Staffing – What are the staff-to-patient ratios? Does the facility have a stable staff base? Does the staff appear friendly and efficient?

·      Food –Does the weekly menu agree with your loves one’s likes and preferences? Have you eaten a meal at the facility? Is the facility able to accommodate any special diet restrictions?

·      Drop-in visits – If you stop by for an unplanned visit, is your experience consistent with your expectations?

·      Activities – Is there a scheduled list of weekly activities? If your loved one has a special hobby, will he or she be able to continue to engage in that hobby at the facility? Is there inviting outdoor space?

Conclusion

There are several things to think about when selecting a skilled nursing community to live in. While the list above is not exhaustive, it offers important considerations when determining which facility is the best fit in your situation.
